How to Evaluate Grant Eligibility

One of the most costly mistakes in grant seeking is investing significant time in applications your organization does not qualify for. Learning to evaluate eligibility quickly and accurately saves resources and focuses your efforts where they matter most. ## Key Eligibility Factors **Organizational Type:** Does the grant fund 501(c)(3) nonprofits, government entities, tribal organizations, or other specific types? **Geographic Restrictions:** Many grants serve specific regions, states, or communities. Ensure your service area qualifies. **Program Alignment:** Does your program directly address the funder's stated priorities and objectives? **Funding Range:** Is the grant amount realistic for your program's scope and your organization's capacity? **Track Record:** Some funders require prior experience with grants of similar size and complexity. ## When to Apply and When to Pass If you meet 80% or more of eligibility criteria, the opportunity is worth pursuing. If you meet less than 60%, your time is better spent on better-aligned opportunities.
